Geijutsu or Bijutsu by the sculptor Koji Kondo

 the sculptor Koji Kondo

was born in 1939 in Tokyo, as youngest of 5 children, his father was a traditional painter and Koji was educated as the same, but it became clear he wanted to express himself in a broader way, he started making fashion, hats, textile designs, small objects and dolls, he went to Paris, back to Japan, to Copenhagen and Amsterdam, there he wished to stay and did.

at one moment a man asked him what he actually did for a living,
Koji Kondo answered:
Nothing, but I can make dolls.
The man said: go and do it.
Koji Kondo made 2 dolls
an exhibition was organised,
but first there had to be 10 more made.....

Koji Kondo papier-mâché figure on the internet

on this Blog we will also show work by the sculptor

Koji Kondo

we found on the internet,

we do not know where these sculptures at the moment are

a fairy tale figure / Sprookjesfiguur, in a wooden and glass frame
we think made of rice paper and metal foil,
created in 1972 by Koji Kondo

a leaflet from an exhibition in
Galerie Merlo, Amsterdam
27 august - 25 september 1983:

saying:
Koji Kondo is born Tokyo in 1939 and
was educated in classical Japanese art painting,
his figures of rice-paper are delicate fairy-tale appearances full of
old Japanese symbols and aesthetic,
united with western themes of surrealistic form,
since 1971 Koji Kondo's work is being exhibited in prominent galeries in
 The Netherlands

Textile doll figure by Koji Kondo, Amsterdam - collection Delta 98 Den Haag

Until only recently we never new

Koji Kondo, Tokyo 1939 born

also made textile dolls.

We discovered them by recognizing the faces

and were able to add 3 to our collection of Koji Kondo figures.

Here a figure / doll of 115cm length:

collection Delta 98 Den Haag,
provenance Onno Willy Boers, Amsterdam 1936-2021,
and De Zwaan auction, Amsterdam, 2021

Made with high skills of luxurious textiles samples,
hand-stiched together
and with lace-like details for the face

In situ this Koji Kondo figure is hanging on the wall,
still, silent, not moving,
apparently helpless,
but the eyes follow you vivedly and
it seems unhappy with what it sees

We found on the internet a review of
a Koji Kondo exhibition in 1991,
at Galerie De Uithof in Utrecht, University Utrecht,
telling that next to dolls, Koji Kondo also showed:
interieur ontwerpen / interior designs

(click on the below to enlarge)

We politely ask readers to provide information or pictures of
Koji Kondo 's designs for interiors.
